KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Le Quy Quynh today paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at his office at Parliament House.

Ahmad Zahid, in a statement, said diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Vietnam, established in 1973, had grown substantially with both parties enjoying close cooperation in various sectors.

"As Malaysia and Vietnam look forward to celebrating their 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2018, Malaysia is confident the relations between the two countries can be enhanced in key areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, agriculture, education, labour, energy, culture, youth and sports, as well as tourism and transportation, in the interests of the nations and their peoples," he said.

He also said that total trade and investment between the two countries rose three-fold over the past 10 years and amounted to US$10.3 billion in 2016.

Following the signing of the Malaysia-Vietnam Strategic Partnership in 2015, the two countries agreed to increase bilateral trade and investment to US$15 billion by 2020.
